What is the best smartphone on the market? Right now the consensus is that the kudos go to iPhone 4, but that may change soon when the Droid X phone hits the market with numerous attractive features not present on the iPhone 4. Even the iPhone-a-philes will be drooling over this new gadget that will set the new standard and change the way we think about phones.

Let’s start off with the processor - 1GHz, along with 512 MB of memory. In other words its fast and will be able to perform all its fancy tricks quite efficiently.

The memory of the Droid X phone is expandable, so if you choose you can get the memory size up to 40 GB, plenty for anything you want to do on a smartphone.

Next let’s talk about the camera - 8 megapixel with flash - oops, iPhone just got left in the dust. Okay, I know that is not enough to convert an Apple lover away from their treasured trinket so let’s continue.

How about putting both 3G and MiFi onto the phone - consider it done with the Droid X! Now you can connect to multiple devices simultaneously while also doing some high speed internet browsing.

Ahhh, now I see you Apple people starting to look over your shoulder. Don’t be shy, we won’t judge you. Come closer, look at the rest of our site and wee what else the Droid X phone offers that you will sadly lack in your Apple iPhone 4 stupor.

Droid X Phone Review

The new Droid X is the fourth of the Droid brand smartphones to hit the market and it has been quite well received. Still it isn’t easy to compete against such powerhouse players as Apple and HTC, so let’s review some of the features of the Droid X and see how it stacks up against the other smartphones.

Most all of the front face of the Droid X is used for the ample 850 by 480 pixel display with just a bit of room on the edges to accommodate the speakers and microphone. On the back of the Droid X is an 8 megapixel camera lens that is video enabled.

The first major difference between the Droid X and the original Droid is the fact that the Droid X phone lacks a QWERTY keybord. One benefit of this is that the new phone is also much thinner. This makes it much easier to handle that other current smartphones on the market with similarly large displays.

The Droid X has 512 MB of RAM and the phone is powered by a 1.0 GHz OMAP processor. Other features include a light sensor, accelerometer, DNLA, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. For an extra fee you can turn the phone into a 3G mobile hotspot.

The TI OMAP 3630 processor in the Droid X phone, which provides 1Ghz using a 720MHz chip. I have already mentioned the 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen display that provides 854 by 480 pixels and the 8 megapixel camera. The camera has LED flash. A CDMA device, the Droid X phone supports EVDO as well.

8 GB of memory are provided (it can support up to 32 GB) on the Droid X, and there is also a 16 gigabyte microSD card. The phone has three separate microphones. The battery of the Droid X phone lasts about 12 hours on average after a fully charge.

One area in which the Droid X phone outdoes other Android smartphones of the moment is that its ample internal storage of 8 gigabytes has no limits on how much of that storage capacity may be used for installing software. When you compare those stats to other smartphones such as the EVO 4G (which only has 1GB) and the Nexus One (which only has 512 megabytes) you can see that Droid X is the clear winner.

A micro HDMI port and USB port is located on the left edge of the Droid X phone. A removable battery is located beneath the rear cover of the Droid X, as is the microSD card.

On the top of the Droid X is a mini-audio jack where you can plug in headphones.

The volume rockers of the Droid X are on the side, while the power button is located on the top of the smartphone and the camera button is on the lower right hand side which works well for clicking photos as you hold the phone in a landscape orientation. Plastic buttons along the front of the Droid X phone are backlit and handle the standard operations of the platform - menu, home, back, and search.

A general consensus on the Droid X phone is that it is a formidable contender in the touchscreen smartphone market and the four-inch touchscreen sets it apart from Motorola’s other smartphones. Another high point of the Droid X is the newest custom Android operating system which is very effective in regards to functionality, particularly when it comes to social networks.

One advantage of the larger screen on the Droid X phone is that it makes it nicer for reading e-books and watching movies. When you are reading a book you can adjust the text size to your liking. Ergonomically the Droid X phone’s width accommodates being held with one hand, and the thinness of the device also helps in this regard.
